Hello Sunshine.

Please feel free to explore my internet hideaway where I post all about my life and travels from around this lovely planet we call home.

Swedish Lapland: The Winter Wonderland of Fairytales

Swedish Lapland: The Winter Wonderland of Fairytales

Kiruna was truly a winter wonderland with a perfect layer of snow, perfect as powdered sugar, as far as the eye could see. A land where you can walk upon frozen lakes and where moose and reindeer are at the top of the predator chain. The bungalow was perfect and had a magnificent view. It also had a wood-burning sauna that did not disappoint. The two main things we did were dog sledding, and snowmobiling to search for the northern lights.

Dogsledding

This was the number one thing we wanted to do here in the arctic circle. We researched and found a dog sledding company to go with and it was a great experience! The guides were extremely knowledgable and the dogs were adorable! They loved running and eating the snow. We stopped midway through for a coffee and tea break then switched teams and went back to base camp.

Snowmobiling

The other big thing we wanted to do in the arctic circle was see the Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights. So we found a tour for hunting for the northern lights on snowmobiles. We got into our snowsuits and took to the trails. We stopped to eat dinner, which was comprised of reindeer stew (with a veg substitute) and then went back out. Unfortunately, it was too overcast to see any northern lights but it was still a fun experience.

My Final Thoughts

This is definitely one of my top three trips of all time! The landscape was straight out of a snow globe or winter book, the experiences were one of a kind, and the people there were great!

For those interested, February-March is peak season for Kiruna. Northern lights are easiest to see then but it really comes down to luck (of which we had none, apparently). I would say the only thing we would do different is rent our own car as the taxis are sparse and expensive. You have to make appointments for them and it can take a long time to get between destinations depending on snow coverage and plowing. If you do rent a car, be experienced in driving in the snow. Also, make sure you have a place to rent snow gear, our lodging had it which made it so much easier to explore and walk around places, but most of the adventure companies have their own to loan out as well.

Thank you for reading and happy traveling.
